It's conveyed in small actions like going to a festival just because Nagisa and Rei want him to come along, or something major like diving into a storming ocean to rescue Makoto. He even drops his well-guarded cool and composed aura to scream running after a friend if he can help them out of a difficult mental spot, like he's done with Rin before. He also doesn't forget promises that he makes to them. As he bonds more with any team he's on, he'll speak up to encourage them, helping to rally them for the next competition. Despite how he often represses his emotions, he tries to show his friends that he appreciates them, even directly telling them such.

Negative Traits

Obstinate

He often acts on his impulses, initial judgments, and even petty grudges, heedless of repercussions unless a friend reasons with him (even then, he might not listen). He gives his coach a hard time when they disagree on how to approach training, even though his coach is much more experienced than him. He also throws off his clothes in public, uncaring that he might make a scene, if he sees a clean body of water to jump into like a cat to fresh fish. When apartment hunting, he refused any place that had an induction cook top instead of a gas stove even when it met all of his other standards, too used to his normal way of cooking. He also can't be dissuaded out of a superstition, insistent that someone's talking about him when he sneezes.

Represses emotions

Haruka doesn't like to let himself feel any strong emotion, let alone express it. When there's a subject that could trouble others and he can't think of how to fix it, Haruka avoids the issue and is unlikely to reach out. He hesitates telling even his best friend about what troubles him, avoiding the subject of life after high school in Eternal Summer. He uses the water to escape his emotions, the stimulation providing distraction and returning him to a neutral emotional state and dulling his frustration-- unless his feelings prove too much to hold back. If it all comes to a head, he ends up breaking down, becoming listless and even getting snappy with his friends who try to help him, so it takes effort to get through to him.

Easily guilt-ridden

Even if it's not directly his fault, Haruka fears hurting others and closes himself off partially out of fear of hurting someone he cares about. Baseless accusations of hurting others are enough to shake him. He believed he was the reason Rin quit his dream of being an Olympic swimmer and so he quit his own swim team, not being able to enjoy it anymore. Quitting that team also meant leaving his teammate Ikuya behind, who'd become very invested in the team. Though the situation with Rin was resolved in high school, Haru's guilt about Ikuya becoming isolated again lasts with him even into college.

Powers and Abilities: Human from non-powered setting, but athletic and powerful swimmer, and skilled at many crafts involving the hands.
Inventory: cellphone (including pictures of his home and friends), his dolphin bath toy, a can of mackerel

Samples:
Thinking example
Communication example

comments

15 Second Summary

At first glance, Haruka is a cool, graceful man who turns heads when he's in the pool-- and as he's getting out, with his talent and beauty. He's stoic, sharp-eyed, and distant from most around him at first. In reality, he's a quiet and eccentric man who eschews logic and has deep feelings for water, but deeper feelings for those he loves.

Abilities & Permissions

Abilities

Aside from being a powerful swimmer, Haruka is generally athletic, as well as being skilled in the arts. With a steady hand, he can paint, sew, cook, and aim a weapon.

Dunamis from Empatheias: magic directed by emotions. Haruka can channel his emotions to affect his surroundings (making flowers bloom from positive emotions, making wind swirl around them from confusion, etc.) The power stems from a blue drop-shaped crystal on an amulet that he wears.

Permissions

Please PM or otherwise contact me in case of any violence/fighting. Otherwise, I'm open to anything, but expect Haruka to quickly shoot down any romantic attempts toward him.

And he is indeed very capable of handling himself (unless he's really shaken emotionally), such as when he just started driving with his friend being a nervous backseat driver. His stoic demeanor gives him a sense of mental strength and makes him look reliable to others, often drawing them to him.

Dedicated friend

Haruka would do anything for his friends. It's conveyed in small actions like going to a festival just because Nagisa and Rei want him to come along, or something major like diving into a storming ocean to rescue Makoto. He'll even drop all sense of composure and scream running after Rin if he can help him. As he bonds more with any team he's on, he'll speak up to encourage them, helping to rally them for the next competition. Despite how he often represses his emotions, he tries to show his friends that he appreciates them, even directly telling them such.

Hard worker

When Haruka puts his mind to something, he doesn't do it halfway. Even in elementary school, he paved a cement path from the road to his house's doorway so his shoes wouldn't get muddy. Starting high school, he was already fully self-sufficient, cooking and cleaning on his own. Though he seemed uncaring about the Iwatobi High School Swim Club being established at first, he carved a large box full of promotional mascot keychains to help advertise it and spent lunch breaks helping to clean the outdoor pool. He trains hard for swimming races, and is now a college athlete.

Perceptive

Even if he looks aloof, he's shown to pay attention to the feelings of people around him, especially if they look troubled. He knew when Makoto was uneasy about training by the ocean while trying to hide it, or when Rei was looking irritated by being kept out of the loop about Rin. Though he also sizes people up if they look like they'll cause him trouble, like Rin (who really ended up changing his life).

Noteworthy Negative Characteristics:

Bottles up emotions

When there's a subject that could trouble others, Haruka avoids it. He hesitates telling even his best friend about what troubles him, avoiding the subject of life after high school in Eternal Summer. He uses the water to escape his emotions, the stimulation providing distraction. But if it all comes to a head, he ends up breaking down, becoming listless and even getting snappy with his friends who try to help him.

Stubborn

He acts on his impulses and initial judgments. When apartment hunting, he refused any place that had an induction cook top instead of a gas stove. He also throws off his clothes in public, uncaring that he might make a scene, if he sees a clean body of water to jump into. He also can't be dissuaded out of a superstition, insistent that someone's talking about him when he sneezes.

Socially awkward

Haruka might be admired, but his lack of social skills becomes obvious at times and he can come off very weird. When he was recruiting for the swim team, he walked to the closest people he could find and into their personal space, offering them a promotional mascot keychain with a imposing expression. If he's annoyed enough with a subject, he finds no problem in walking away while the other person is talking. It often takes strange bonding experiences for him to make new friends.

Takes guilt on easily

Even if it's not directly his fault, Haruka fears hurting others and closes himself off partially out of fear of hurting someone he cares about. He believed he was the reason Rin quit his dream of being an Olympic swimmer and so he quit his own swim team, not being able to enjoy it anymore. But quitting that team also meant leaving his teammate Ikuya behind, who'd become very invested in the team. Though the situation with Rin was resolved in high school, Haru's guilt about Ikuya becoming isolated again lasts with him even into college.

Character Fears: Losing those closest to him, deeply hurting others, and life-sized human dolls
Powers/Abilities: He's a human from a non-magical world, but he's a powerful swimmer and generally athletic with sharp reflexes, skilled with any detailed work with his dexterous hands.
Personal Item: His smartphone, with pictures of Iwatobi and his friends saved on it.

VOLUNTEER SAMPLES
Network Sample: Link to Network example
Action Log Sample: Link to Log example

comments

Members give aid to fellow monsters and monsters-to-be and dissuade them from giving allegiance to the gods. They also research for potential ways to subvert the power of the gods and spy on the plans of the followers, as well as train for battle, whether it be defensive or an offensive strike.

A Council will lead the group, but disputes will be put up to a vote. There are three main roles within the members:

Support
E.g. Recruiting, building, working in businesses to help provide for monsters

Research
E.g. Following leads on Ryslig history, searching tomes, planning archaeological expeditions

Combat
E.g. Training others for self-defense, defending each Territory the Fellowship owns, strategic maneuvers

Please comment to this post if you want to add your character (and what they'll specialize in/All-Around if they can do it all) or a location or other things to this list, and any other details needed. We can handwave some part of the recruiting process if you would like. Acts include not just strip shows and dancing, but live music, poetry reading (during the day), as well as several comedy acts and a karaoke bar next door.

Where most places might fire you if you've turned terrifying, the Triple T will probably give you a bonus the closer you get to the uncanny valley. Come enjoy a place where you can freely admit you're into feathers and horns, we ain't gonna judge.

Serving both humans and monsters alike, the Triple T places the safety of its clients and staff as its highest priority. Violence, roughhousing, fighting or accosting the staff in any way is completely forbidden. Break the rules and you will get kicked out and banned <s style="color: rgb(19, 59, 80); font-family: "ms gothic"; font-size: 1em;">maybe eaten,</s> no exceptions. Besides that, the minimum entry age will be enforced during performances meant for a more mature audience, but less often for acts that are appropriate for all ages.

The theater features several tables for seating and dining, a stage for music and performances as well as several walkways for the more risqué fair. Any role aside from the first can be filled multiple times. Generally, Haruka is lenient and will sign anyone on as long as they seem like a decent and hardworking monster, but he might be discerning about certain qualities (as in god followers). All workers under 18 will be scheduled to work earlier in the day.

No flying. No climbing. It disturbs the guests and has too high a chance to injure someone in case of a mishap. Exceptions: during shows, if it is part of the act.

2. No hypnosis, this includes singing, eye contact, etc. As a common courtesy to our customers, don't ever take away someone's free will while inside the Typhon Theater.

3. No eating people. This goes without saying. You cannot bring a "snack" with you to the theater, as this would upset our human patrons. Exceptions: drinking blood is okay, as long as it is obtained and purchased at the bar.

4. Be aware of shedding. Be it feathers, fur, scales or any other secretions, be mindful of others (and the cleaning staff) and avoid leaving a mess while at the Typhon Theater.

5. Above all else, treat EVERYONE with respect, patrons and workers alike. This includes but is not limited to: scaring off patrons, making patrons uncomfortable, or threatening to maim/injure/eat anyone. He loves the water and wins many prizes for the club, but seems indifferent about racing until he races Rin. He becomes frustrated at how he believes Rin "feels the water" better than him and then by Rin's repeated attempts to coax him into swimming relay with him. Haruka initially refuses on the basis that he "only swims free", but his other friends truly want to swim as a team with him, so he finally relents. As they train together and bond, Haruka finds himself deeply moved by these new feelings in him. There's the start of something like a competitive streak, as Haruka even starts to imitate Rin, running home after school instead of bicycling.

The second book (and its movie adaptation) starts with Haruka starting middle school. His loneliness and fear of others leaving him are a large focus of this entry, as well as the continued development of a latent competitive streak. He's frustrated at Rin for leaving to Australia to train at the end of the first book, worried that Makoto will drift away from him, and almost reluctant to even join the swim club again if he can't do the relay with his original team. Two other swim club members are introduced and both are affected deeply by his swimming skill, to the point where one feels hopeless when trying to race Haruka. His reaction causes Haruka to think he only hurts others with his swimming, like his skill is a burden. An envious teammate resents Haruka almost as much as he's interested in him as a swimmer. He gets angrily confronted by Sousuke, Rin's best friend, who thinks Haruka's not pushing himself hard enough if at least for Rin's sake. Fortunately amidst all this middle school pressure, Haruka has mentors to help him and his prospective teammates. In the end, Haruka swims the relay and they all manage to become a team and even friends, despite all their differences.

A flashback set between the books and anime shows the first reunion during middle school between Haru and Rin since Rin went to Australia. Haru is happy to see Rin, but he doesn't realize how fragile Rin's hope has become. After he challenges Haruka to a race, which Haruka wins, Rin calls it quits for his Olympic dream while running away in tears. Haruka fears he hurt his friend and withdraws back into his shell, quitting his swim club and competitive swimming. This leads into the dull, jaded Haruka in his second year of high school seen at the start of season 1.

The events of the anime's first season start when Nagisa urges him and Makoto to go to their old, abandoned swim club before it's demolished. There, they end up meeting Rin again, but he's become cold and indifferent to his old friends, only interested in racing Haruka again to prove who's the fastest between the two. Not to give up on their friend, Nagisa suggests that his schoolmates form a swim club so they can meet Rin again at a swimming tournament. After recruiting their manager Gou and a fourth swimmer named Rei, the middle of the season is about bonding with the rest of the Iwatobi swim team. When they go to the swimming tournament prefecturals, Haru has the race with Rin as the latter had wanted, ending with Rin's victory. Rin tells Haruka that he'll never swim with him again, which devastates Haruka and leaves him in confusion since he believed Rin defeating him would relieve Haruka of his guilt. He doesn't even want to watch his friends in their individual races, but Nagisa drags him over. Haruka is moved by seeing how hard everyone is trying and decides to swim the relay with them, but he's still confused about his emotions.

When he finally sorts his feelings out, he admits to his friends that Rin cutting ties with him made his world go dark, but their relay made him just as happy as it did in elementary. It comes as a shock when the next day, he hears that Rin joined his own team relay. As the day for their regionals relay race approaches, Haruka shows more of his thanks to everyone and the support they've given him. But when the day arrives and he sees Rin completely ruin his individual race, Haruka tries to run to him, stopping in his tracks when he hears Rin declare he's quitting swimming, making him remember the time he said that before. Haruka slumps against a wall, on the edge of tears as he thinks of how he can't swim with Rin again, but Rei (who secretly confronted Rin) tells him that Rin didn't really blame Haruka, and that he wanted to swim with Haruka too. In the wildest show of emotion Haruka ever put on, he runs screaming after Rin. Though Rin is in a bad state at first and tries to rebuff him, Haruka doesn't give up on trying to get through to Rin. It results in Haruka's relationship with Rin being repaired, setting his heart at peace... for now.

Season 2 shows a lot more of Haruka's willingness to try harder for his team, even taking the lead and writing training schedules. He's more emotionally open, smiles more, and is generally more encouraging. However, he's also at a loss about his future, with only "free" written in the form to consider his future career in. Makoto acts strangely, but Haruka doesn't ask too many questions if because it would invite questions about himself. He meets with Sousuke again, who instantly shows aggression towards him again for "getting in Rin's way". Many people suggest competitive swimming to him as a future, but he's against it. He doesn't tell anyone why, but it turns out to be because he fears that he'll lose his freedom in doing it, and he just doesn't want things to change.

The pressure starts to pile up on him until he's distant and snappy with his friends. He even quits swimming in the middle of a race and just stands in the pool, leading to a huge shouting match with Rin, where Haruka declares he has no future. Then his usually steadfast best friend Makoto tells him that he's moving to Tokyo for university and Haruka finally realizes that things are changing whether he likes it or not, and he holes himself up in his house. Rin whisks him off to Australia, partly a way to help his friend relax and partly a way to show Haruka an Olympic-sized pool. Experiencing things in a foreign country and witnessing the Olympians' pool makes Haruka realize that he wants to see more of the world, to swim in that world, and pursue competitive swimming after all. In the epilogue, Haruka is shown to have moved to Tokyo to attend the university he's been scouted to, and later at an international race against Rin.

Personality: At first glance, Haruka is a cool, graceful boy who turns heads when he's in the pool-- and as he's getting out. He's stoic, sharp-eyed, and utterly distant from most around him. He acts and speaks decisively. When addressing others, he never uses any honorifics/suffixes. But how aloof he acts comes from his poor communication skills. Some people confuse his difficulty in reaching out to others as shyness-- he rationalizes it as finding communication with others too troublesome. He warms up far faster to animals and little children (such as Makoto's siblings who absolutely adore him), perhaps because it feels less complicated with them. Yet sometimes he gets frustrated when he wants to talk to others, feeling out of his depth, seen in his struggles in how to talk to Rin when Rin initially returns from Australia. Despite how much of a front he puts up, he does fear being alone. We see this in how upset he gets when Makoto leaves the swimming team and when it seems Makoto is moving along in his life without him.

One term used by the director for Haruka is "waterdere". It helps him feel calm, in a place no one else can reach him. He thinks of water as a living being, something that bears its fangs and attacks those who jump in, but there's nothing to fear as long as they accept the water. When he wants answers, he'll often look to the water first. Sometimes it can be taken to ridiculous degrees, such as a pleasured face as he's shot in said face by a water gun that can only be compared to arousal. Haruka even describes a waterfall as his first love. Yes, really.

Anyone who knows him for a little while will quickly realize that he's actually quite weird, jumping into any water that he can submerge himself in and fawning over bizarre character mascots. His "logic" is inconsistent when it isn't completely nonsensical. Trying to explain to someone who thinks in facts and precise formulas won't turn out well, as he often uses vague explanations involving the heart and soul, such as "the water is alive" or "the water doesn't like him" when referring to someone who can't swim. Actively trying to persuade or sweet-talk anyone would only end in hilarity, if he ever felt the need to try-- his attempts at gathering new members for the swim club were not subtle and involved him chasing them down with hand-carved school mascots. All in all, he's quite odd, and marches to the beat of his own drum. And he likes it that way.

As a quiet guy, the anime shows a great deal of Haruka's personality in what he looks at (or avoids looking at) and the expression he wears as he does. The most obvious is how his eyes sparkle at the mention of a pool, but despite his indifferent mask, he takes notice of what's going on around him and reacts accordingly. He often quickly tries to force his face back into some neutral look, but someone perceptive can figure out that his poker face isn't as great as he thinks. When embarrassed or confused about his feelings, he tends to turn his head to the side, and he can't lie too well to someone without looking away. But sometimes there are things he gets happy about enough about that his eyes practically sparkle, and it doesn't even have to be water!

Haruka is partially self-conscious about some matters, not so much about others-- the deciding factor seems to be in how much embarrassment gets in the way of what he wants. His laugh is a rare event that has only been drawn out of him by tickling. He doesn't want to be called Haru-chan and definitely not Haruka, preferring his nickname Haru. However, at the same time, he had no problem wearing a girl's swimsuit to save a bullied friend from embarrassment and he sees no issue in jumping in store aquariums. When it comes to water, there is no embarrassment.

When it comes to things that he immediately wants, Haruka will rarely hesitate to go for it, no matter the circumstances. He'll strip down to his swimsuit that he's always wearing at the sight of water he can submerge himself in, even a fish tank with fish inside. It makes him easy for people to persuade him into doing things, such as telling him there's a big pool in Samezuka Academy with Makoto and Nagisa want to visit there. Nagisa even convinced Haruka to let him move in with an armful of canned mackerel, Haruka's favorite food. He's very transparent about those wants and can get pretty stubborn about it too, making it difficult when his friends were trying to throw a surprise birthday party but he wanted to see the island's mascot Shimashima-chan.

Another thing that Haruka's cool facade hides is just how sentimental he can be. His flashbacks and mementos show that he dwells on the past a lot, and can end up thinking about it a lot as he stews in the bath. All of the trophies he's won by himself are stuffed in a box, while his relay trophy and photo sits in plain view, clearly more cherished than the rest. He still uses a bath toy that he got when he first joined the swim club in elementary school. This has served him well when trying to get through to Rin who is just as sentimental, writing words that Rin used years ago.

When Haruka befriends someone, he doesn't take it lightly. It'll start in small gestures, building up until he's ready to do anything to help them. He shows this in his gradual befriending of Rei. He'll make heartfelt speeches about how this friend is important to him, and genuinely thank them. He'll go out of his way to make sure that they're happy, will show up for them, protect them, and give them advice. He often brings Makoto lunch when he forgets it and pretends it's no big deal or lets Nagisa stay at his house when Nagisa is having parental issues. Underclassmen who admire him like Nagisa and Rei are especially his weak point-- he tends to dote on them and go along with what they say most easily. Only with his true friends can he really let down his walls and speak how he really feels. But any friends of his should expect a lot of good-natured teasing and bringing up embarrassing stories about them, especially Rin who puts the most effort into teasing. While not a tactile person, he'll let friends get touchy-feely with him - hugging, arm around his shoulders - as long as he doesn't get too jostled. Strangers and people he doesn't like will have Haruka blatantly sidestep them or even have them pushed/slapped away, as he does to poor Kisumi. The kind of people that Haruka avoids the most are people who clearly want to involve him in some scheme, and generally pushy people, but with enough patience they can become friends too. This was pretty much what happened with him and Rin at first.

With having such talent in the water, some of his woe comes from feeling like he's too good, that he breaks the hearts of people who worked far harder than him. Such as his teammates when he was in middle school, with one instance enough to make him quit competitive swimming and retreat into a shell, where he felt that he had hurt his friend by making his dream of becoming an Olympian impossible. He would far rather be "ordinary" than hurt others. While he usually claims that something will require too much effort, Haruka does have great admiration for people who do work hard, and they often end up inspiring him to work hard too. When the swim club needs the pool cleaned and members recruited, Haruka quietly takes up the tasks, even spending lunch break cleaning the pool and making keychains of their mascot. Along with working hard also has an emerging sense of competitiveness spurred on by swimming that makes him want to train hard, despite supposedly not wanting to expend much energy. Despite how cool and impassive he can look, there's a fire in him that can really light up his eyes. He notes this himself when he notices that still, "tamed" water isn't enough... and his eyes shine after a race later that episode.

More sensitive than people take him for, Haruka has had problems dealing with his emotions. In the light novel, he comes to realize his reliance on the water to distract himself from his feelings. After just starting to get attached to Rin, then hearing that he's going to move to Australia, Haruka feels angered and wants to run away to the water. In that moment, he realizes that he's used the water to block out other thoughts. Throughout the anime there are shots of Haruka sitting in his bathtub, dwelling on thoughts usually regarding his friends. His complicated feelings towards Rin through the first season led him to break down twice, one where he had to run away from everyone else and another where he slumped against a wall to curl up in hopelessness. In the second season, building pressure to find his future eventually leads Haruka to avoid or even yell at his friends when they bring up the subject. Even when Makoto suddenly announces he's moving away, a shocked Haruka only angrily spits out the words "do whatever you want" before running off. These breakdowns usually caused by putting off the problem for too long, whether it be attempting to reconcile with his friend or thinking of his future. But with some help from caring and understanding friends, Haruka manages to overcome the problem and discuss his feelings more openly.

This canon point sets him post-season 2, where he's tried to work on more of his flaws. He may still try to brush things off as too much trouble and come off as a little blunt, but it'll be easier for him to soften up. He still sees his friends every now and then, but he has to find his own way to grow in post-high school and post-small town life. Perhaps he can meet new friends without others to help, eat more than just mackerel, and find places to go on his own. He's been prepared for this new phase of his life thanks to the support of his friends and the swim club.

Debt: Haruka doesn't want for much at this point in his life, and he has a goal to work towards that he doesn't need a wish for. He can only be taken in by a trick, like his parents were taken and turned into livestock. While they might not be the most tight-knit family, he still would do whatever it takes to rescue them. Plus, he'd really believe that his weird, free-spirited parents would get tangled up with a witch.

Previous Game Info: Haruka's canon point is not long after getting into the university he's been scouted to, which is also when he walked out of the locker room, thinking he'd see the pool... but instead, he fell into a world full of people with animal ears and other attributes. He also found that he suddenly had cat ears and a tail to match the citizens of the place he'd accidentally been brought to by portal-opening magic gone awry. The land of Butterwick was full of magic and possibility, but things were more complicated than they seemed at first, with people divided into societal roles based on the attributes they had. He generally stayed out of the conflict rumbling underneath the cute exterior of the land and tended to a cozy little cafe. His ability (called Talents in Utopique) is to animate a little flying blob of water that he keeps as a pet, which can move around at will. One place he'd often visit was the deep sea city called Odd Hollow, where people with aquatic animal attributes lived.

His emotions are easily seen through how his ears and tail move, which helped facilitate the realization of mutual romantic feelings between him and Rin Matsuoka. From that, he's become more open to affection and more understanding of romance, if not really the typical romantic himself.

When Makoto was attacked in a more dangerous part of town and his eagle wings were damaged, Haruka was devastated and later searched for a way to restore his ruined flight feathers. He found a potion from a suspicious salesman and was risky enough to test it on himself first, leading to his hair growing out to his waist. Convinced of its ability, he (stealthily) used it on Makoto, who indeed grew new feathers.

While being a reserved type, Haruka did gain some acquaintances and tentative friends during the time in Butterwick, like his roommate Juzo Sakakura (and meeting Kyousuke Munakata as a result). The two of them affected his view of relationships (Kyousuke more directly, Juzo more indirectly). He also met Aqua the water mage, whose powers he envied. Though Aqua is silly and over-the-top herself, she'd have to call out Haruka's odd tendencies. And he could not help but be reminded of his beloved mascot characters when he saw Princess Minnie Mouse there, usually giving or receiving sweets.

As a result of his experiences in Utopique, Haruka isn't fazed by magic anymore or the idea of people from other worlds ending up in one place together. He's also more aware of the dangers that can bring harm to him or his friends that he would likely would have not known in his canon, like when fights and attacks caused by class-based tension broke out, or a vampiric creature bit him and gave him a temporary thirst for blood. This has led him to be more careful and protective of those he cares about.

Inventory: A swimsuit (jammer), goggles, a collar that allowed him to breathe underwater, lower quality clothing from the Cypress dorm in Utopique, skin-tight clothing worn by the inhabitants of Odd Hollow, and his pet blob of water simply named Pool-san.

Abilities:
Swimming
Swimming is Haruka's greatest passion in life. He's swift and graceful, and feels an intimate connection with the water. At this canon point, he's training in a university, presumably to make the national team.

General Athleticism
As he trains to be a professional athlete, Haruka is very fit and strong. One drawback is that he's not the fastest runner, and he doesn't lift as much as his friends yet, but he has been working on that and it still sets him above the average person.

Home Economics
His friends have all praised his cooking, and it's counted as one of his hobbies along with cleaning. Though he does seem to use mackerel most of the time.

Art
Whether it be through pencil sketches, paintings, or sculpture, Haruka can make aesthetically pleasing artwork. He nearly gets dragged off by the art club to join them instead of the swim club.

Dexterous fingers
Listed among his skills, it extends past art. He's shown to do well at shooting games at festivals, and he can catch water yo-yos with ease. He can definitely win prizes at festival games.

Strengths and Weaknesses:
Cool
Level-headed and reserved; to most people, Haruka would look in control of himself at all times. And he is indeed very capable of handling himself (unless he's really shaken emotionally). His stoic demeanor gives him a sense of mental strength and makes him look reliable to others, a perception he'd like to keep.

Talented
Skilled in art, athletics, and being really handy, people admire and envy his abilities. He doesn't make a big deal of these skills, but with so many people telling him, he can't be unaware of just how good he is.

Dedicated friend
He'll set any sense of cool and even risk his life for his friends. Whether it's attending an event they really wanted to go to, jumping into a storming ocean to save them, or screaming at the top of his lungs in public to find them, Haruka will go any distance for the ones he loves. (Though let it be known that he will try save a stranger's life if he can, too.)

Perceptive with people
He may not look curious, but he's always trying to size up others to see if they're going to cause trouble for him. While initially suspicious of most people, he can warm up to them if he thinks they're generally good-- or not trying to mess with him. He can tell when his friends are troubled, and will try to cheer them up in small ways or even directly confront them about it if it's pressing enough. However, if he himself is in a bad state, this is not as likely.

Passionate
Haruka may take some time to come around to an idea, but when he does, he'll put his all into it. Nothing he does is half-assed-- it's either all or nothing.

---

Poor communication skills
This manifests in many different ways. Sometimes he can be unnecessarily blunt, though he doesn't try to be hurtful. "Group work" was one of his listed weaknesses, and he would prefer to do the work himself rather than talking with others. But he is working on that, little by little. Depending on the person, he might say something genuine, but make a bad choice of words and give them the wrong idea without bothering to correct them.

Bottling up
A side-effect of his coolness. When there's an uncomfortable yet unavoidable subject, Haruka will try to avoid it anyway. He hesitates telling even his best friend about what troubles him. He uses the water to escape his emotions, the stimulation providing distraction. But if it all comes to a head, he ends up breaking down, becoming listless and completely shutting others out.

Stubborn
If anyone wants to get him to do anything that looks like a lot of trouble, and it's not a life or death matter/involving someone he cares for, it better be water-related or involve mackerel. Otherwise, he'd prefer to not get involved. Exceptions are of course made for friends, but even then... It's just as hard to dissuade him if he's made up his mind about something.

Impulsive
As cool as he may be, he will throw his clothes off in public to jump in the water. It takes something serious happening to get him to ignore it, really focusing on something else, or else someone will have to grab him.

Weak to dryness
He doesn't react well to foods like crackers or dry bread if he doesn't have a drink, as he'll feel like he's losing moisture. The longer he stays away from water, the more his mood will decline. Gotta keep the aquatic theme going. However, he can be shaken up emotionally to the point he wants to avoid water.

( SAMPLE )

Characterization Sample:

Thread with injured Makoto

comments

He loves the water and wins many prizes for the club, but seems indifferent about it until he races Rin. He becomes frustrated at how he believes Rin "feels the water" better than him and then by Rin's repeated attempts to coax him into swimming relay with him. Haruka initially refuses on the basis that he "only swims free", but his other friends chime in, he finally relents. As they train together and bond, Haruka finds himself deeply moved by these new feelings in him. There's the start of something like a competitive streak, as Haruka even starts to imitate Rin, running home after school instead of bicycling.

The second book starts with Haruka starting middle school. His loneliness and fear of others leaving him are a large focus of the book, as well as the continued development of a latent competitive streak. He's frustrated at Rin for leaving to Australia to train at the end of the first book, worried that Makoto will quit swimming in favor of something else like basketball. Fortunately amidst all this middle school pressure, Haruka has a mentor who helps them all sort everything out. In the end, Haruka joins a relay and they all manage to become a team and even friends, despite all their differences.

A flashback set between the books and anime shows the first reunion between Haru and Rin since Rin went to Australia. Haru is happy to see Rin, but he doesn't realize that Rin has not done well in Australia. After he challenges Haruka to a race, which Haruka wins, Rin calls it quits for his Olympic dream while running away in tears. Haruka fears he hurt his friend and withdraws back into his shell, quitting competitive swimming.

Haruka slumps against a wall, on the edge of tears as he thinks of how he can't swim with Rin again, but Rei tells him that Rin didn't really blame Haruka, and that he wanted to swim with Haruka too.

In the epilogue, Haruka is shown to have moved to Tokyo to the university he's been scouted to, and later at an international race against Rin.

Personality:
At first glance, Haruka is a cool, graceful boy who turns heads when he's in the pool-- and as he's getting out.

Abilities: Athletic swimmer, good cook, skilled with his hands in general.

Alignment: Haruka is suited to Sosyne, as calm is generally his default emotion, and stability is important to him. When something troubles him, he often runs to the water to try to rid himself of his problems and return to his calm state. He also has occasional but intense flare-ups of anger if pushed enough, but usually in regards to sudden changes in his life, like Rin leaving to Australia after they'd become friends or people prodding himself about his future after high school when he's confused and unsure of it himself.

Other:

⌈ SAMPLE SECTION ⌉

Remember that we ask for samples that show 1) core character portrayal and 2) some use of emotions, such as environmental effect. You can also use the same sample source for both, just make sure to directly link or quote the emotion portion. We highly encourage using the Test Drive, and you can use prompts from the Test Drives, Intro Logs, and the Task board if you need them. Refer to the main application page for links and more suggestions.

General Sample: Link Out

Emotion Sample: Test Drive

Questions:

comments

Hello! I am offering some commissions for DW points. For now, in chibi form.

For Ryslig, they can be cute and creepy, or just cute if you wish. Open to characters from any type of media, of course, as well as any type of monster!

Line art = 50 points / $5 USD (example here, bloody)
Color art (flat) = 80 points / $ 8 USD (example here (a shade))
Color art (full) = 90 points / $ 9 USD (example here(a mer))

A simple background for a transparent .png for an extra 10 points / $1 for if you want to use it somewhere in something with a pretty layout maybe.

For best results, please link me other character designs and/or descriptions. And do tell me every detail of what you would prefer, such as the pose, type of eyes, size of the image/file type, etc! The more details the merrier.

I'm taking five (5) commissions at the most for now.

This leads into the dull, jaded Haruka in his second year of high school seen at the start of season 1.

(the Wiki plot link fits in around here)

The middle of season 1 is about bonding with the rest of the Iwatobi swim team.

Haruka slumps against a wall, on the edge of tears as he thinks of how he can't swim with Rin again, but Rei tells him that Rin didn't really blame Haruka, and that he wanted to swim with Haruka too.

In the epilogue, Haruka is shown to have moved to Tokyo to the university he's been scouted to, and later at an international race against Rin.

Personality:
At first glance, Haruka is a cool, graceful boy who turns heads when he's in the pool-- and as he's getting out.

5-10 Key Character Traits:
Reserved
Fears hurting others
Free-spirited
Dedicated friend
Sentimental
Difficulty dealing with his own emotions
Stubborn
Impulsive
Obsessed with water

Would you prefer a monster that FITS your character’s personality, CONFLICTS with it, EITHER, or opt for 100% RANDOMIZATION? EITHER

Opt-Outs: vampire, wendigo, troll, arachne, minotaur

Roleplay Sample:

Test Drive

comments

He loves the water and wins many prizes for the club, but seems indifferent about it until he races Rin. Though Haruka wins their race, he feels strangely frustrated at how he believes Rin "feels the water" better than him, despite how Rin has no interest in that. Rin only has interest in getting Haru to join his swimming relay in a tournament, which Haruka refuses on the basis that he "only swims free". It's a pun on swimming freestyle and swimming without any connections to others. However, when Makoto and Nagisa (a sweet kid who looks up to Haruka, who Haruka has a soft spot for) really want him to join, he finally relents. But as they train together as a team and bond with each other, along with Rin's passionate speech about why he started the relay, Haruka finds himself deeply moved by these new feelings in him.

He's frustrated at Rin for leaving to Australia to train, worried that Makoto will quit swimming in favor of something else like basketball. One line even mentions him being lonely at home, suggesting that his parents might not be all that present either. Two other swim club members are introduced, Asahi and Ikuya. Both are affected deeply by his swimming skill, to the point where Asahi feels hopeless when trying to race Haruka. Asahi's reaction causes Haruka to look at himself like he only hurts others with his swimming, like his skill is a burden. An envious Ikuya resents Haruka almost as much as he's interested in him as a swimmer. He gets angrily confronted by Sousuke, Rin's best friend and jealous of Rin's interest in Haruka, who thinks he's not pushing himself hard enough if at least for Rin's sake. Fortunately amidst all this middle school pressure, Haruka has a mentor in Nao, an upperclassman, who helps them all sort everything out. In the end, Haruka joins a relay with Makoto, Asahi, and Ikuya. They all manage to become a team and even friends, despite all their differences. (There's an upcoming film adaptation of this book that may make changes, so I can canon update if needed.)

A flashback set between the books and anime show the first reunion between Haru and Rin since Rin went to Australia. Haru catches sight of Rin and hurries over to him, actually openly happy and excited to see him, a drastic change from the frown he usually greeted Rin with. However, he doesn't realize that Rin's smile is forced, and Rin challenges him to a race. Haruka is the victor just like before Rin went to Australia, which looks like the breaking point for Rin as he calls it quits for his Olympic dream while running away in tears. The thought that Haruka hurt his friend so deeply as to make him give up on his dream makes Haruka withdraw back into his shell and quit competitive swimming, leaving his friends at the swim club. This leads into the dull, jaded Haruka in his second year of high school seen at the start of season 1.

(the Wiki plot link fits in around here)

The middle of season 1 is about bonding with the rest of the Iwatobi swim team, with them training on the beach and sharing stories to get their minds off a frightening near-drowning experience. They all swim in the ocean together, look at the stars, fall asleep on the beach. When they go to the swimming tournament prefecturals, Haru has the race with Rin as the latter had wanted, ending with Rin's victory. Rin tells Haruka that he'll never swim with him again, which devastates Haruka and leaves him in confusion-- didn't he think that Rin winning would free him from his guilt? He doesn't even want to watch his friends in their individual races, but Nagisa drags him over. Haruka is moved by seeing how hard everyone is trying, but he still disappears afterwards as he's lost in thought. The support from his friends gives him the drive to join in the relay for the next day, but even after that he's still confused. Rei wants them all to go to a festival, and Haruka decides to join despite original plans to stay in.

When he finally sorts his feelings out, he admits to his friends that Rin cutting ties with him made his world go dark, but their relay made him just as happy as it did in elementary. It comes as a shock when the next day, he hears that Rin joined his own team relay. After some bonding time, and Haruka noticing Rei's odd reactions to mentions of Rin with Rei pressing for the truth, Haruka finally opens up about the past. Haruka slumps against a wall, on the edge of tears as he thinks of how he can't swim with Rin again. However, Rei speaks up and tells Haruka about what he learned from talking to Rin on his own-- that Rin didn't really blame Haruka, and that he wanted to swim with Haruka too. Though Haruka asks if Rei is okay with giving up his spot first, he really wants Rin to swim with him.

He meets with Sousuke, Rin's still-jealous best friend, who instantly shows aggression towards him again for "getting in Rin's way".

But when his usually steadfast best friend Makoto tells him that he's moving to Tokyo for university, Haruka finally realizes that things are changing whether he likes it or not, and he holes himself up in his house. Rin whisks him off to Australia, partly a way to help his friend relax and partly a way to show Haruka an Olympic-sized pool. When asked if he wants to swim in the Olympic pool or the public pool, Haruka ultimately chooses the Olympic pool. Being there makes Haruka realize that he wants to see more of the world, to swim in that world, and pursue competitive swimming after all. Upon returning to Japan, Haruka apologizes to his Iwatobi friends for how he acted and explains how he feels now. They all take part in their relay at nationals, and while they don't rank high, they all hug each other with the first time Haruka is ever shown crying. In the epilogue, Haruka is shown to have moved to Tokyo to the university he's been scouted to, and later at an international race.

Personality:
At first glance, Haruka is a cool, graceful boy who turns heads when he's in the pool-- and as he's getting out. He warms up far faster to animals and little children (provided that they aren't terribly misbehaved) perhaps because it feels less complicated with them. Yet sometimes he gets frustrated when he wants to talk to others, feeling out of his depth. Despite how much of a front he puts up, he does fear being alone...

Anyone who knows him for a little while will quickly realize that he's actually quite weird, jumping into any water that he can submerge himself in and fawning over bizarre character mascots. He seriously claimed that his first crush was a waterfall. His "logic" is inconsistent when it isn't completely nonsensical. Trying to explain to someone who thinks in facts and precise formulas won't turn out well, as he often uses vague explanations involving the heart and soul. Actively trying to persuade or sweet-talk anyone would only end in hilarity, if he ever felt the need to try-- his attempts at gathering new members for the swim club were not subtle. All in all, he's quite odd, and marches to the beat of his own drum.

However, when he does befriend someone, Haruka doesn't take it lightly. It'll start in small gestures, building up until he's ready to do anything to help them. He'll make heartfelt speeches about how this friend is important to him, and genuinely thank them. He'll go out of his way to make sure that they're happy, will show up for them, protect them, and give them advice. Underclassmen who admire him are especially his weak point-- he tends to dote on them and go along with what they say most easily. Only with his true friends can he really let down his walls and speak how he really feels. But any friends of his should expect a lot of good-natured teasing and bringing up embarrassing stories about them. While not a tactile person, he'll let friends get touchy-feely with him - hugging, arm around his shoulders - as long as he doesn't get too jostled. Strangers and people he doesn't like will have Haruka blatantly sidestep them or even have them pushed/slapped away. The kind of people that Haruka avoids the most are people who clearly want to involve him in some scheme, and generally pushy people, but with enough patience they can become friends too.

His laugh - a very cute and funny-sounding one - is a rare event that has only been drawn out of him by tickling. He doesn't want to be called Haru-chan and definitely not Haruka, preferring his nickname Haru. So naturally, he'd end up saddled with the name Nana. However, at the same time, he had no problem wearing a girl's swimsuit to save a bullied friend from embarrassment and he sees no issue in jumping in store aquariums. When it comes to water, there is no embarrassment.

His physical beauty is also commented on in-universe and in supplementary material, but he doesn't really think much of it. He takes care of himself and uses nice shampoo to keep his hair from drying out from chlorine, but he doesn't think to flout his attractiveness or to court anyone. He also picks very simple, loose clothes that he can throw off at a moment's notice so he can go dive into some water. Romance is a complete blind spot to him, and he'll be completely oblivious to any crush. This isn't helped by how he can be gallant and princely, as well as cute-- both acknowledged in-universe! However, the director has said that as a boyfriend, his partner would have to really love swimming.

This has served him well when trying to get through to a friend who is just as sentimental, writing words that said friend used years ago.

Haruka is the kind who believes fortune telling, superstition, and looks for symbolism in the world around him. When told that according to a superstition that his estranged friend must be thinking of him, Haruka's shocked expression makes it clear he takes it seriously. He can be seen staring intensely at the fortunes he draws. As a child, when others suggested planting little flowers around a grand cherry blossom tree, Haruka strongly objected to the idea. He felt the little flowers took away from the beauty of the tree... a tree he later muses that he sympathizes with. After all, he wanted to be just left alone, away from the little flowers-- other kids.

Identifying with the tree surrounded by the smaller plants could be read as how he sees himself, but his ego isn't that big, waving off praise for his skills with "anyone can do that much" or not even giving a response at all. In any case, he doesn't have low self-esteem, and his self-doubts don't come from thinking he's not good enough. More of his woe comes from feeling like he's too good, that he breaks the hearts of people who worked far harder than him. While he usually claims that something will require too much effort, Haruka does have great admiration for people who do work hard, and they often end up inspiring him to work hard too.

Miscellany: Haruka is a morning person, often first taking a dip in his swimsuit in the bath before making his breakfast.

In various bonus material, Haruka has been likened to a cat, even turned into one in a dream. At least, a cat that likes water.

In an ending with the theme "what were their childhood dreams aside from swimming", Haruka had both a merman and a chef. It's likely Haruka was told he couldn't be a merman when he grew up.

Debt:
Haruka doesn't want for much at this point in his life, and he has a goal to work towards that he doesn't need a wish for. He can only be taken in by a trick, like his parents were taken and turned into livestock. While he might not be close to them, he still would do whatever it takes to rescue them. Plus, he'd really believe that his weird, free-spirited parents would get tangled up with a witch.

Previous Game Info:
N/A

Inventory:
University team jersey
Swimsuit, black and purple jammer
Travel backpack
Cellphone
Water bottle
Iwatobi-chan key chain

Abilities:

( SAMPLE )

Characterization Sample: In either prose or bracket text, we would like at least one sample that contains 300 words minimum to convey and display your characters introspection and voice. Reusing samples from other applications is perfectly fine, so long as they meet the minimum requirement!

You may also link us a thread that is at most one year old, and we would like to see at least ten comments from your character; please note that it should be a thread that contains enough of a conversation that we could get an idea of character voice and how they are portrayed in your personality section.

comments

Nanase Haruka
Age: 17-18, depending on canon point (usually 18)
Height: 175 cm

Haruka, usually preferring his nickname of Haru, is a quiet, blunt, and eccentric boy. One of the traits most commonly noted about him is his love of water. Another thing is that he tends to like bizarre animals and mascot creatures. He doesn't let people get close to him too easily, in a emotional sense. But for the people he comes to consider friends, he would do anything for.

Post-canon

Since I play him from post-Eternal Summer, Haru is more at emotional peace than he ever has been before. Usually the kind who avoids confronting his feelings, whether it be about other people or his plans for the future, his newfound confidence helps him find his way. However, he still won't be exactly confident in matters of romance, as he's never dealt with it directly before.

Living on his own in Tokyo, Haru can't see his friends nearly as often as before, so he has incentive to try to meet others. He's not the best at socializing and still not likely to reach out to strangers, but he's more receptive than before.

comments
